The Pope and the Vatican

The Jerusalem Report, June 1, 2019

This was an interview with American-Israeli biblical scholar, Marc Brettler, who recently published The Jewish Annotated New Testament, which he also presented to Pope Francis as a gift. Brettler said that reactions to a Jewish New Testament ranged between “curious and horrified”, in part due to the fact that Jews are wary of the New Testament, which has had “painful repercussions for the Jewish people”. Nevertheless, he expressed his excitement at presenting his work to Pope Francis, who “received the work happily, and handed it to his assistant saying that this is a very important work, and that the assistant should keep track of it and keep it near him.” Brettler said the encounter with the pope has stayed with him. He also thanked Francis for his constructive work in Jewish-Catholic relations.
